Crowns And Bridges

Dental Crowns

A dental crown is a custom-made cap that fits over the entire visible portion of a tooth. Crowns are used to restore teeth that have been significantly damaged, weakened, or broken, helping to rebuild their shape, strength, and function.

Crowns may be recommended in situations such as:

  • A tooth that has been weakened by extensive decay or a large filling
  • A cracked or fractured tooth that needs structural support
  • Following root canal treatment to protect the treated tooth
  • A tooth that is severely worn down or misshapen
  • As the final restoration on a dental implant

At our Croydon clinic, we also offer same-day CEREC crowns, which can be designed and fitted in a single appointment using advanced CAD/CAM technology.

Dental Bridges

A dental bridge is a fixed restoration used to replace one or more missing teeth. The bridge consists of one or more artificial teeth (pontics) held in place by crowns that are fitted over the natural teeth on either side of the gap.

Bridges can help address concerns related to missing teeth, including:

  • Restoring the ability to chew and speak comfortably
  • Maintaining the shape of your face
  • Distributing bite forces by replacing missing teeth
  • Helping to prevent remaining teeth from shifting out of position

Your dentist will assess whether a bridge is suitable for your situation, taking into account the condition of the supporting teeth and the number of teeth to be replaced.

Materials and Options

Crowns and bridges can be made from a range of materials, each with different characteristics. Your dentist will discuss the options with you and recommend the most appropriate material based on the location of the tooth and your individual needs.

  • Porcelain — provides a natural tooth-like appearance and is commonly used for front teeth
  • Ceramic — metal-free option offering good aesthetics and biocompatibility
  • Zirconia — a strong ceramic material suitable for both front and back teeth
  • Porcelain-fused-to-metal — combines the strength of a metal substructure with a porcelain outer layer

The process typically involves two or more appointments: an initial visit for preparation, impressions, and fitting of a temporary crown or bridge, followed by a second visit to place the permanent restoration. With same-day CEREC technology, certain crowns may be completed in a single appointment. Your dentist will explain the expected timeline during your consultation at our Croydon practice.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long do dental crowns last?

The lifespan of a dental crown depends on the material used, the location of the tooth, and your oral hygiene habits. With proper care, crowns can last for many years, though they may eventually need to be replaced.

How many appointments are needed for a crown?

Traditional crowns typically require two appointments — one for preparation and impressions, and a second to fit the permanent crown. Same-day CEREC crowns may be completed in a single visit.

Is getting a crown painful?

The tooth is numbed with local anaesthetic during the preparation process, so you should not feel pain during the procedure. Some mild sensitivity after the appointment is normal and usually temporary.

What is the difference between a crown and a bridge?

A crown covers a single damaged tooth to restore its shape and strength. A bridge replaces one or more missing teeth by anchoring artificial teeth to crowns placed on the neighbouring teeth.

Can I get a same-day crown at Divine Dental Care?

Our Croydon practice offers same-day CEREC crowns for suitable cases, using CAD/CAM technology to design and mill a ceramic crown in a single appointment. Your dentist can advise whether this option is appropriate for your tooth.
